Unabridged Birth Certificates
Travelling with kids but don’t have their new Unabridged Birth Certificates? We can help.
Unabridged birth certificates are issued free of charge by the South African Home Affairs Department within a few days of registration of a child’s birth.
Since the 26th of May 2014, the South African Immigration Department requires that parents or guardians travelling with a minor under the age of 18 present an unabridged birth certificate. Parental consent in addition to Unabridged Birth Certificates are required to be presented where a minor is travelling with a relative or other person.
The South African government’s rational for introducing the measure is to eliminate the possibility of child trafficking as the document is secure, reliable and contains details including ID numbers of both parents. Old Unabridged Birth Certificates will no longer be accepted and the parents or guardians of all children born prior to March 2013 will be required to apply for a new Unabridged Birth Certificate when travelling.
