Since the 1st of June 2015, all travelers accompanied by minor children under the age of 18 entering or leaving South African ports are required to present to emigration officials in addition to their passports, an Unabridged Birth Certificate for each child accompanying them. The requirements applies equally to parents, legal guardians family members or ordinary persons accompanied by children entering or leaving South Africa. Where children are travelling with one parent, with family members or ordinary persons other than both parents, additional documentation is required.
What is the difference between unabridged and abridged birth certificates?
Both the unabridged and abridged birth certificates are computer printed documents and both certificates can be apostilled or certified. Abridged birth certificates contain only the most rudimentary information in contrast to the Unabridged Birth Certificate which contains the following information:
Child’s details:
- Names and surname
- Id number
- Gender
- Date and Place of Birth
- Country of birth
Mother’s details:
- Mother’s Identity Number
- Mother’s maiden name
- Mother’s Forenames
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Country of birth
Father’s details:
- Father’s Identity Number
- Father’s surname
- Father’s Forenames
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Country of birth
Endorsements where available
Whereas abridged birth certificates are issued on the spot by SA home Affairs, Unabridged Birth Certificates can take up to 2 weeks from the date of application so we urge customers to apply for them in good time.
